Minehead Escooter Survey

Closed 30 Sep 2022

Opened 30 Aug 2022

Overview

The escooter trial in Somerset West and Taunton is part of a Department for Transport approved escooter trial, launched in July 2020.

There are a total of 31 local authority regions across England taking part in the trial and the Department for Transport has a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation programme underway to assess the safety of escooters and their wider impacts.

The Somerset West and Taunton trial went live in Taunton on the 30 October 2020 and in Minehead on the 5 June 2021. Both schemes are managed by our escooter operator Zipp Mobility.

The Taunton trial is approaching its two-year anniversary and the scheme is maturing well. However, there are key aspects between the two trial areas that make them quite different. For example, the Minehead trial has been operating for just over a year and as a coastal town has a different demographic to Taunton. It’s home to Butlins and, at the height of the summer season, the town's population is significantly increased by an influx of tourists on a weekly basis. There are also out of season events scheduled throughout the year which bring additional people into the town.

In June 2022 the Department of Transport announced an extension of the trial until 31 May 2024. Extending the trial allows the Department for Transport to fill the data gaps, make necessary changes to ensure the trials are as safe as possible and establish best practice for shared micromobility services.

Why your views matter

Due to the differences between the trial areas, we have decided to carry out a public survey that focuses on the Minehead trial.

This survey is aimed at members of the public and stakeholder groups who are users and non-users. It is intended to share information, seek your views on how we can enhance the scheme and how you feel about extending the trial.

There are 11 questions in total; how many are relevant to you will depend on whether you are a user or non-user. The questions cover a range of topics including residency, age, usage, user experience, the law, safety and enhancements.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey which should take no more than 5 minutes for you to complete.
